Friday Free Stuff: Open Street Map

I discovered OpenStreetMap in use on Metro's preview website. Much of the New Zealand data is sourced from Land Information New Zealand, but it's a collaborative site: you can upload your own GPS data and edit the existing data.

And you can not only view the map directly on their website or embed the exact area you want on yours, but also export the data in OpenStreetMap XML format. Wikipedia lists an increasing number of map sites using OpenStreetMap data adapted for walking, cycling, orienteering, skiing, public transport, aviation, and the sea.

Currently it's licensed Creative Commons (see guidelines for citing) but this is in the process of changing to a license that's similar but better designed for data.
