Tutorial: Library Catalogue

Searching

The Library catalogue offers a number of search options. The seven most frequently used search options are all visible from the Library catalogue search screen.

The default search, Keywords, will find the largest number of results. It will search for keywords in all fields including the title, author, subject and contents fields of the catalogue record.

Activity: Keywords

You wish to find the following book in the Library catalogue:

Belich, James (1996). Making peoples : a history of the New Zealanders : from Polynesian settlement to the end of the nineteenth century. Auckland, N.Z. : Penguin Press.

Open the Library catalogue in a new window and search for "making peoples" using Keywords as shown below:

How many results do you find?

Now try adding the author, James Belich, to the search by searching for "making peoples belich".

How many results did you find? Why do you think the number of results is different in the second search?
