Writing

Tutorial: Citing your sources

Why Cite?

When writing an assignment you will come across other peoples' ideas, theory or research that you will want to reference in your own work. Making reference to other work is called citing or referencing. Citing (or referencing) sources is important to:

  • give another author or organization credit for their words, opinions or ideas to avoid plagiarism.
  • direct readers to the original sources, if they want to find further information.
  • improve the credibility and authority of your own work.
  • avoid losing marks.

Include a citation in the body of the paper as well as a reference list or bibliography at the end of the essay.
