Module 5: Review and Exercise
How many records make a successful search?
There is no magic formula for determining how many records make a successful search. If you begin with a very specific, narrow search, you may end up frustrated that you are not finding what you need. On the other hand, if you enter a very broad search, you may retrieve thousands of records. The best approach is to:
- Begin by casting your search net relatively widely (remember to use truncation and apply limits for journal article, research and English language).
- Use one or two carefully chosen main concepts.
- Use Boolean Operators (AND, OR) to link the concepts.
- Take time to browse through your results, don't expect "the one" perfect article to appear immediately.
- When you are searching for evidence based research, you are encouraged to read at least 20 records before deciding to refine your search.
