What are journals?

psychology research articlesJournals are excellent sources for finding the latest information and academic research. A journal is published on a regular basis (usually monthly or quarterly). Journals are often peer reviewed or refereed.

Most journal articles are either:

Empirical studies describe original research. The authors of the article are presenting the results of their research for the first time. The article tyically consists of sections that correspond to the research process: introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, conclusions. Empirical Studies are primary source documents.

Review articles provide interpretation and further analysis of research that has already been published. These are secondary sources as they refer to primary source material.
