What is Interloan?
Interloan (or Interlibrary loan) is a way to get books and papers which you require for your University of Canterbury study, research and/or teaching that are not held by the libraries of this university. Please check the library catalogue.
Do I qualify for ‘distance’ Interloan services?
If you are a fully enrolled current University of Canterbury student who lives outside of Canterbury, or enrolled in study offered by distance from this University you may qualify for distance Interloan services. We are unable to process requests placed for personal use, or on behalf of another, for non-University study, research and/or teaching.
When are ‘distance’ services available?
Interloan staff are available to provide these services
Monday to Friday, 8.30 am to 5 pm.
Requests received late on Friday or at the weekend will be actioned the following Monday.
Limits
There is no limit on the number of interloans that can be requested or supplied at any one time.
What can be requested?
Journal articles, papers from proceedings, law reports etc. are photocopies for your retention. Patents and standards can be obtained. Books are for use within New Zealand for the time specified by the supplying library. For Reference Only material such as theses and audio-visual material, it is suggested that, if unable to consult these in the University of Canterbury Library, distance users request these through their public library. Books not able to be obtained from within Australasia are not available on interloan to staff/students resident outside Canterbury.
How do I request an interloan?
Interloan requests are submitted electronically via the Web form.
Please check the Library Catalogue before submitting a request. The interloan service is only available for items not held by the University of Canterbury Library. To request items that do appear in the Library Catalogue please use the usual request process for books, or the Journal Article/Paper request form.
How much does it cost?
Non-urgent interloan requests required to support your University research, study, and/or teaching are provided. Most costs are met by your department, unless the cost to the Library exceeds $50 users, in which case you will be asked if you wish to proceed and to pay the cost in excess.
The charge for an Urgent interloan (see below) is $20.
How and when is an interloan paid for?
Internal charging to departments is done by the library each month for items supplied.
Overdue fines are the personal responsibility of the user.
Can I renew my Interloan?
Most interloans are able to be renewed however you are not able to renew these yourself. Only the Library that supplied the interloan can approve an extension to their loan and only University of Canterbury Interloans staff are able to contact them.
Please contact Interloans staff if you would like to request a renewal.
Returns
A self-addressed return bag will be provided for loans.
Urgent requests
An urgent request is one that is required in less than one working week. Urgent requests must be discussed with Interloans staff to establish if the desired delivery time is possible. There will be no urgent charge if the agreed "need by" date is not met.
You may need to pay the extra $20 urgent charge yourself. Please ensure money is loaded onto your Canterbury Card.
Copyright restrictions
No more than one article from an issue of a journal may be obtained at any one time, or two articles if they are on the same topic.
How long will it take to arrive?
It is impossible to guarantee a time of delivery for an item requested on interloan. Non urgent requests are processed the day after they are placed. Periodical articles are usually received within one (to three) week(s) of the request being processed, however some obscure items may take considerably longer. Books generally take longer to arrive than articles as they are more likely to be on loan and the delivery time will be longer.
It is impossible to guarantee a time of delivery for non-urgent items requested on interloan.
Urgent articles from national or international suppliers sent by electronic transmission can be here within 24 hours - fast posted articles take a little longer.
Please contact Interloans staff if you would like a progress report on your interloan request.
