Heritage Collections Tours

Treasures in the University of Canterbury Library

  • The University of Canterbury Library holds one of the largest and most significant collections of heritage materials in New Zealand. We welcome and encourage the viewing and use of the heritage collections by members of the public.
  • We run tours for interested individuals and groups to take advantage of these special and unique materials, whether it is for the purpose of research or just for general interest.

What heritage collections could I see on a tour?A selection of unusual items including a piece of Thor Heyerdahl's raft the Ra II, and the Psychic Research Society scrapbook.

The University of Canterbury heritage collections are held at the Macmillan Brown Library. They include the art, archives, architectural drawings, photographs, published, and memorabilia and ephemera collections. These collections are impressive in their scope and cover a vast range of subject areas. Specialist areas include Māori and Pacific culture, society and history as well as New Zealand heritage with an emphasis on the Canterbury and West Coast provinces. For more information see our Heritage Collections page.

What would I do on a tour?

Tours take place in the Macmillan Brown Library, and are available free of charge throughout the year from 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Times may be subject to University requirements and staff availability.  We suggest that tour groups are limited to fifteen people per tour. For information on the location of the library please refer to our campus maps.

The tours may be general in nature, with an introduction and overview to each of the collections. Alternatively, we welcome the opportunity to tailor a tour to suit a particular interest or research area.  For instance, some past tours conducted include:
