Audiovisual Resources

The Macmillan Brown Library has a large number of AV items which are kept in the Aotearoa room or may be requested at the service desk. CDs and videos/DVDs may be taken out on loan. Other material must be used in the Library only. The Audiovisual Room contains a microfiche reader/printer, microfilm reader, tape deck, TV/Video, DVD player, stereo and CD player.

Compact Discs

The CD collection includes traditional and contemporary music from the Pacific Islands, Māori song and chants, music by New Zealand composers, and a collection of New Zealand popular music. CDs may be borrowed for the normal loan period.

Videotapes/DVDs

All videotapes are in PAL format. Macmillan Brown Library has videos and DVDs about both New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Most videos may be borrowed for the normal loan period.

Microfilm

Newspapers, manuscripts, theses, and British Colonial Office records relating to New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
The Macmillan Brown Library does not have a printer for microfilm. Microfilm users requiring print copy may take microfilms to the AV facility on level 2 of the Central Library.

Microfiche

Many genealogy sources are held in this format. We also have the White Ribbon (Womens' Christian Temperance Movement journal), and the Papua New Guinea Patrol Reports.  A microfiche reader/printer is available.

Audio tapes

Audio tapes (cassettes) include Māori history and speech, music, literature, and oral history. Many items from the Radio New Zealand Mobile Unit, Radio New Zealand Sound Archives and Replay Radio are within this collection. These tapes must be used in the library only.

Prints/Posters

Macmillan Brown has many fine prints by mainly New Zealand artists. There are also commercially produced posters from such sources as the Alexander Turnbull Library, and the Museum of New Zealand. Māori and Pacific Island language posters are available. Please ask at the Service Desk to see these.
