Photographs - Macmillan Brown Library - Library - University of Canterbury

The Macmillan Brown Library has many photographs available. Some are in specific photograph collections, while others are within archival collections. Christchurch, Canterbury, and the West Coast feature strongly in the Photograph Collection, but there are also photographs of people and places elsewhere in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. The images are from originals that were in different formats including 35 mm film, slides, glass plate negatives and prints.

In order to preserve the originals and to make this resource available to the public, the Macmillan Brown Library has provided hard copy prints of some 20,000 photographs. These images are available via our ‘copy print collection’ which is located in the Macmillan Brown Library reading room and is available to all who wish to use it. An increasing number of these images are available online - search via Kā Kohika

Clients must formally request to use images for purposes other than private research and study. At the discretion of the Library, an additional reproduction fee may be charged. Generally, a reproduction fee is only charged when an image is used commercially. The 1994 New Zealand Copyright Act applies to all images in the collection, and it is the responsibility of the user to comply with copyright regulations.

All requests for copying and reproduction must be completed using the appropriate forms which are available from the Macmillan Brown Library.
