Macmillan Brown Library
Scope of the core collection
The Macmillan Brown Library is the University of Canterbury's research collection of New Zealand and Pacific Islands materials, with an emphasis on the humanities and social sciences. It is named after John Macmillan Brown.
The Library holds a core collection of 100,000 books, pamphlets and periodicals, together with additional collections of archives and manuscripts, photographs, maps, prints, ephemera, videos, CDs, cassettes. There are also a number of special collections.
There is a large open-access collection consisting of books on Māori culture, society and history, and books in te reo Māori. This collection is housed in the Aotearoa Room on Level 2 of the Library. Many of the items in this collection may be borrowed for the standard loan periods. Lending books are identified by a Māori motif on the spine.
