Indexes and Finding Guides
After consulting R. John Pritchard and Sonia Magbanua Zaide’s The Tokyo War Crimes Trial: The Comprehensive Index and Guide to the Proceedings of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (1987) and Kenneth M. Wells’ Index to the Records of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (Japanese War Trials 3 May 1946 – 4 November 1948 (1983), the “Indexes and Finding Guides” section of the Northcroft collection is a good place to start. This section includes the Summary of Proceedings and Brief of Facts Presented by the Prosecution under the heading of “Finding Guides”. A survey of these two sets of documents is a time-effective way to gain an understanding the proceedings of a trial. If further detail is required, moving on to the full Transcripts and Exhibits is suggested. The Summary of Proceedings summarises the Prosecution and Defence cases with references to transcript pages and exhibit numbers. It does not include references to the individual defences of the Defendants (Transcripts, pages 28108 - 36961) or the Close of the Defence Case (Transcripts, page 37175). It also does not include the Rebuttal by the Prosecution (Transcripts, pages 37176 - 38585).
The full title of the Brief of Facts is Brief of Facts Presented by the Prosecution By Direction of Justice General Myron C. Cramer (US). It is a compilation and condensation of the facts and evidence presented by the Prosecution, originally completed by Justice Cramer’s assistant for his personal use. Justice Cramer then had it reduplicated for his brethren on the Bench. It is arranged chronologically and includes references to exhibit numbers.
