Converting your Thesis to PDF

Your thesis must be converted to pdf before it can be deposited electronically. It can be uploaded as one or multiple files.

  • If you have only one file to upload please name it thesis_fulltext.pdf.
  • If your thesis file is larger than 80MB please split it into appropriately named sections eg introduction.pdf, chapter1.pdf etc.
  • if any of your files exceeds this limit and cannot be easily split, please contact Library eServices.

PC users

The University has a site-licence for a conversion tool, Amyuni PDF Converter, which can be installed on University computers. This tool is accessed in the same way as a printer, from the printer selection box from the print menu.

If you use Office 2010, Word can save a document as a PDF file. If you use Office 2007, you can also do this if you install a plugin available from the Microsoft web site.

Macintosh users

Either Save As or Print the document and choose the PDF option.

Converting Latex documents

The easiest and safest way of producing a PDF file from a latex document is to use the "ps2pdf" program - part of the ghostscript package, included with most linux distributions.

For example, if the postscript file created when you printed your thesis was named "thesis.ps", running the command "ps2pdf thesis.ps" should produce a PDF file of your thesis called "thesis.pdf". If possible, check this PDF file on another platform (eg MacOS or Windows) to make sure that fonts and especially images are rendered the way you want.
